The resort of
Santa Cesarea Terme is situated on the Adriatic coast of
Salento, Puglia, about 10km from Otranto and 35 km from Lecce, and lies within the province of Lecce. It is a place of extraordinary beauty, with its main attractions being the presence of the sulphurous springs, grottos and inaccessible bays. The economic growth and various developments in the area allow the visitor to enjoy the benefits of the "acquae terminali" and are ideal for a restful and re-energising holiday. It was around two centuries ago when the rich Leccese bourgoisie decided to
holiday here and benefit from being near the thermal springs and minerals. For this reason it is possible to find here the sumptuous palazzos, old residences and magnificent summer homes that are not found elsewhere. At Santa Cesarea Terme it is possible to experience the full range of holiday choice, from 4* hotels to holiday homes and apartments. There has also been the recent development of prime location holiday homes, situated just behind the historic city centre. These new homes have been built to green belt legislation and with minimal impact on the environment and surroundings.
Of interest is the legend of the origins of the name of Santa Cesarea. The tale tells of the young, Christian, virgin Cisaria who was persecuted by her father for not wanting to commit incest with him. To seek refuge from her torturer she hid in a sulphur grotto and was burnt alive by the strong chemical.
Characteristics of the coast around Santa Cesarea TermeThe coast line is rocky with two main grottos of note; Zinzulusa and Romanelli. The coastline continues south to Santa Maria di Leuca which is the furthermost point of the 'heel' of Italy. A common feature of this tract of coastline of Salento and of interest to geologists and those interested in natural history is the proliferation of rock stacks and prehistoric grottos. Some of these are only accessible by sea and the locals recommend visiting the "Archi" and the "Caicco". There are a few golden sandy bays such as at Porto Miggiano which break up the coastline.
