Holidays at Otranto - Otranto is a well known resort, much visited coastal resort in Salento. It is on the Adriatic coast and is the easternmost city in Italy. From here you can see Vesuvius. Otranto is 41 km from Lecce, 44 km from Gallipoli and 54 km from Leuca, and is an international resort, with holidaymakers coming from around the world. Otranto origins lie in the time B.C. when it emerged from Greek colonisation of the area and derives its name from the stream of water, which flows near the port, "the Idro". Otranto is about 70 km directly opposite to Albania and about 800 km from Egypt. The district coastline runs about 10 km from Otranto to the south finishing at Torre Sant'Andrea, taking in the towns of Torre Santo Stefano, the lakes and Alimini and Frassanito. For years now Otranto has been awarded blue flag status for (what has been known for decades) its wonderful clean seas. Today Otranto is surely one of the most beautiful and interesting places to holiday in Salento, it has a modern city centre and an attractive historical town which positively throbs with life during the summer and whose very walls and stones invite you to visit the past. Characteristics of the coast of Otranto (Lecce - Salento - Puglia) The coast has small light grey sandy beaches. A calm sea is the norm during the summer period. Immediately to the north and south of Otranto is the rocky coastline, and this extends virtually uninterrupted for about 60 km to the town of Leuca. To the north lie the sandy beaches of Alimini and these little coves continue to the resort of Torre Sant'Andrea.
