Castro Marina is a coastal resort on the Adriatic coastline of Salento. It is 15 km from Otranto, 45 km from Lecce, 50 km from Gallipoli and 25 km from Leuca. Its origins are recorded from the time of the Greek and Cretan empires and it has come under the rule of; Romans, Byzantines and Saracens to name but a few. Castro is one of Puglia's fortified cities and its exceptionally deep-sea beds are ideal for harbouring large navel vessels and merchant ships. Built on a promontory it is sheltered from the land by the sea. Gattinara built the castle you can see today around the 1500's. It is along this coast that you can find grottos where even today, fishermen repair their nets. From the pictures it is obvious that Castro is ideal for visitors who love driving along the rocky coastline to find small country lanes leading to sheltered little bays with sandy beaches, such as Porto Miggiano to the south and Porto Badisco to the north. At times it can seem here that you are in a different world, which makes it ideal for a wonderful relaxing holiday. What make the difference are the combination of three natural elements; the sea, the rocks and the flora of the Mediterranean, found only here in Puglia. Castro itself is 2 small independent towns; Castro Marina at the bottom and Castro itself higher up. Immediately to the south you can find the Marittima Marina. These resorts are well planned and organised for the holidaymaker with many apartments and houses for rent during the holiday period. Characteristics of the coast of Castro Marina - holiday destination in Italy Castro is situated on the 40th parallel of the northern hemisphere and on a nautical map this lays where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet. It is found half way along the coastal road between Leuca and Otranto and is noted for its incomparable scenery at the Zinzulusa grotto, which opens out to the sea.
