The hinterland of salentine peninsula
Everybody knows that the road around the coast is more scenic, but also the interior of the Salentine Peninsula is full of several wonderful sights. From Otranto road 16 runs inland to Maglie, at the centre of the peninsula. Before reaching the town of Palmariggi turn left. After a few metres turn left again to the Masseria Quattro Macini, a farm, near which you can see a group of seven dolmens and standing stones. 5km further south of these lies Minervino di Lecce, with a fine Renaissance chiesa parrocchiale. Just outside the town, on the road to Uggiano la Chiesa, is the Dolmen di Scusi, the largest and best preserved of these primitive structures.
The manufacturing town of Maglie contains several Baroque buildings, such as the church of the Madonna della Grazia; the Chiesa Parrocchiale, the campanile of high recalls that of the duomo at Lecce; and the monumental Palazzo Capece. The most recent house is the Museo Comunale di Paleontologia e Paletnologia (open 09.00-12.00, 18.00-22.00, closed Sun morning; tel. 0836485820), which has a collection of fossilised fauna the Pleistocene period and archaeological material from nearby caves.
